Changing this Blog

I’m going to keep this blog going, but I’m changing its focus. My main blog is now at www.shoorayner.com. I’m going to open out this blog to be more about drawing in general rather than just my own videos on Youtube. Hope you will enjoy seeing how it goes.

How to draw a cute cartoon Japanese Geisha

I was asked to draw this by a YouTube friend in Croatia! I’ve always loved Japanese things so this is the result. She doesn’t look very Japanese. Everytime I tried to make her look Japanese she was either too much a weternised stereotype or it looked like an 18th century print. Have a go anyway.

If you can’t see this at school or in a library because Youtube is blocked, then go to my own site www.shoo-tube.com which is allowed through most content filters in schools.

How to draw a Squid!

This drawing lesson was inspired by a story we made up at Cwmtridwr Junior School near Caerphilly, recently. Squid are weird and wonderful things. I’m beginning to quite grow fond of them and octopi too. You can see this on my website www.shoo-tube.com if you have difficulty seeing youtube in schools or libraries. if the pages look odd – please update your browser! Some schools are years behind!

How to Draw an Ocean Liner – A lesson in perspective

Here’s a brand new video on my Drawing School at www.shoo-tube.com.
While making my videos I realised that I have developed a natural sense of perspective over the years and have come to take it for granted, yet many people don’t quite get how it works and if you are young and never been shown, then you won’t know about it anyway.
I was shown a trick in perspective drawing when I was about seven years old, that I’ve never forgotten. My God father, who was an architect and always drawing, showed me how to draw an ocean liner coming towards you, like they do on those wonderful poster from the twenties and thirties.
I’ve used the same kind of image here but, with the wonders of printing stuff out from the internet have brought the lesson up to date a bit. The basic lesson about perspective is still the same. Straight lines continue to a vanishing point on the horizon.

Criticism – don’t take it lying down – Shoo Rayner Writing School

I’ve posted a vid on Youtube about criticism. I got two pieces of criticism on my drawing school site that made me think. One was not nice and one was brilliant. How can the bad one, (from someone who is obviously ignorant and thoughtless) be so crushing and the good one not quite make up for it? Here’s some advice for those who don’t pick up the pen for fear of being criticised.

It’s a bit weird writing stories when I know that the covers are already sorted out! I’m revising the third story of Axel Storm at the moment. Actually, I’m pretty much re-writing it. I decided to change a major part of the series, which has put a different slant on all the stories. It’s made them all much better, but does involve a lot of re-thinking.

I struggled with this story, Jungle Fortress, all last week. I’ve been waiting for the last stone to fall into place. It did, last night as I was falling asleep. I woke in a panic this morning, wondering if it had only been a dream and that it was nonsense or that I couldn’t remember the idea.

Phew! It drifted back to me and it makes sense too. Better get on an write it now
