This drawing lesson was inspired by a story we made up at Cwmtridwr Junior School near Caerphilly, recently. Squid are weird and wonderful things. I’m beginning to quite grow fond of them and octopi too. You can see this on my website www.shoo-tube.com if you have difficulty seeing youtube in schools or libraries. if the pages look odd – please update your browser! Some schools are years behind!

Hamworthy Library Opening – Poole, Dorset

Last time I visited Hamworthy Library it was squatting in the old school gym. and having to move the bookcases every night for the Judo Club, while the new one was being built.
Yesterday was the official opening of the new library and I’d been asked to come and read some stories. When I arrived, the place was crammed and buzzing. I’m sure the organisers were thrilled with the response. Wallace and Grommit were keeping everybody happy.
It was very noisy! I was between the facepainting and the bookmark making stands. Being lunchtime. my audience kept wandering off but quite a few returned too! We did some lovely Ricky Rocket drawings, and then I was interviewed by Maree Perkins, a journalism student who was filming and taking note of everything. She seemed very passionate about Journalism and we had a short chat about where it’s all going online. She’s very keen on preserving free online access to newspapers but, sadly, like everyone else, she had no idea how she was supposed to be paid for it! You can read her blog post about the day here.
Thanks everyone for an amazing opening day and good luck for the future.

How to draw a Daffodil for St David’s Day

Just in time for St. David’s Day on March 1st, here is a lesson in how to draw a daffodil. St David is the Patron Saint of Wales. For my international readers, England is not the whole Island of Britain. Wales is on the west and Scotland is on the north side of England. Ireland is an island on its own to the west of Britain.
Wales is a country with its own language and culture. The Daffodil is the national flower of Wales.
I am English. I live about six miles from the Welsh border. My children went to school in Wales where they learned a bit of Welsh, my Grandmother was a Welsh speaker and I lived in Welsh-speaking, wild, West Wales for a while, when I was starting out as an illustrator. I learned a tiny little bit of Welsh in all that time. I was sat on my own for most of the time – you need to hear a language all day long to really pick it up.
You can always draw daffodils to celebrate spring or for a Mother’s Day card – which isn’t too far off either.

Show of Hands – Arrogance Ignorance and Greed

It doesn’t help much but this song and video help you feel a little better. I heard them on the radio this morning and they said they were into spreading themselves across the internet, so enjoy watching, guilt free.
Arrogance Ignorance and Greed are of course the initials of AIG , one of the financial houses that started the crash.
It made me wonder what ever happened to mutuality? Of course it got sold out in Halifax shares, but surely it’s still a good idea. The Banks have been brilliant nd brainwashing us into debt and mistrust of probity. And to think that Gordon Brown thought his second name was Prudence – Ha!
Obviously the Bankers can’t be trusted anymore, even when they’ve screwed up right and royally they refuse to change their ways. Create new, mutual banks and destroy the smug old syatem.
